Abstract
Groundwater is one of the main sources of clean water supply, playing an essential
role in meeting the needs of living organisms. However, its availability often
decreases due to contamination by metals such as Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), and
Total Suspended Solids (TSS), which frequently exceed the Quality Standards as
stipulated in the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023
concerning the Standards of Clean Water Quality. Excessive contamination of Iron
(Fe), Manganese (Mn), and TSS not only deteriorates the physical quality of water,
indicated by changes in color, odor, and taste, but also poses potential adverse
health effects such as digestive disorders, tissue damage, and skin diseases.
This study aims to determine the effect of the pre-treatment process and filter media
thickness in reducing the concentrations of Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), and TSS in
well water at Gampong Lampoh Daya, Banda Aceh City. The research method
employed was a laboratory experiment with a quantitative approach. Well water
was tested before and after undergoing the filtration process, namely: (1) The pre-
treatment process, an initial treatment using coral and palm fiber with a thickness
of 45 cm, yielded the lowest test results at sampling point II, with Fe at 0.031 mg/L,
Mn at 0.035 mg/L, and TSS at 3.3 mg/L. (2) The filtration process, using coral,
palm fiber, activated carbon, and silica sand, achieved the lowest test results at a
filter thickness of 90 cm at sampling point II, with Fe at 0.05 mg/L, Mn at 0.1 mg/L,
and TSS at 2.4 mg/L. Based on the experimental results, the combination of pre-
treatment and filter thickness can serve as an alternative solution for reducing the
levels of Fe, Mn, and TSS contained in well water.
